Prevention of waste

In order to meet the environmental and economic challenges of reducing waste, we would like to set two quantified objectives: to reduce our production of household and similar waste by 7% and to reduce by 15% the waste intended for the landfills for incineration.

Why reduce the amount of our waste?

For several years, we have learned to sort our waste, to use the sorting points for packaging, and waste disposal for bulky, dangerous or garden waste. But there is always waste that must be burned or stored. The cost of collection, incineration and storage is heavy and will increase as waste volumes increase, despite the sorting.

It is therefore necessary to reduce the quantity of our waste in order to limit incineration and storage and to control the costs associated with waste management. Reducing the amount of waste is also an important source of raw material savings.

This reduction can only be done at the source, before the waste integrates the collection circuits. Indeed, the best waste is the one that is not produced. The local program for the prevention of household and assimilated waste has actions planned with that goal in mind such as:

Develop food waste management

 Each American person throws 89 kg of food waste per year:
• 20 kg of food waste, including 7 kg of still packaged waste
• 69 kg leftover meals and peels that could be processed at home.

Remains of meals in the garbage, overconsumption, bad management of the dates of consumption, … are more or less part of our daily lives. These actions participate, even without us being aware of it, in the food waste. We can all act to reduce our food waste and save money because it is about $550 that go to the trash every year.

Another idea is to develop the collection of textiles on the territory. Whether worn, old-fashioned or holed, all textiles, linens and shoes can be reused or recycled! It suffices to deposit them in a suitable terminal or to give them to an association.

We can sort the clothes and underwear, the household linen (sheets, towels, …) and the shoes, but some instructions must be respected:

• Be clean and dry
• Be placed in the terminals in closed bags (50 liters maximum)
• For shoes, be paired
